Skyhook Wireless (formerly known asQuarterscope) is a Boston-based company that has developed atechnology for determining geographical location using Wi-Fi as the underlying referencesystem. Using the MACaddresses of nearby wireless access points andproprietary algorithms, WPS candetermine the position of a mobile device within 20-30 meters. Itprovides service similar to GPS without GPS hardware and can alsointegrate with GPS-enabled devices to provide hybrid positioning. Skyhook Wireless claimsthat with sub-second time-to-first-fix, supposed 20-30 meteraccuracy and near 100% availability indoors and in dense urbanareas, it is very complementary to GPS.
Skyhook's database is gathered through wardriving,[1] andincludes more than 100 million wi-fi access points and covers 70percent of population centers in the United States and Canada.[2]
Skyhook Wireless offers Loki[3], a free'virtual GPS' toolbar that automatically integrates a user'slocation with web content such as Google Maps, Fandango, Weather.com, etc. It has been now replacedby a 'Find Me' page on the website, as well as tools and SDK's usedfor adding location-based data to sites such as seen asWeatherBug.com.
Skyhook announced a partnership to help users in geotagging theirpictures.[4]
At the Macworld Conference &Expo in January 2008, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced that both the iPhone and iPod Touch will use Skyhook's WPS as theprimary location engine for Google Maps and other applications.[5]

Skyhook offers a software development kit(SDK), which allows developers to create location-enabledapplications. This uses Skyhook's software-only Wi-Fi PositioningSystem on the platform of their choice. The software developmentkit is compatible with all GPS NMEA applications, and provides excellentaccuracy and confidence estimation.
The SDK supports Windows XP, Vista and Mobile, as well as Symbian OS, Mac OS X, and Linux platforms.[6]
Privacy andhacking
An article published by Terry Stenvold describes how to use theSkyhook database with an iPhone and a laptop running Linux to identify the location of a MAC address.[7] Thearticle was written in late February 2008 but because of the 2600'srules for publishing it didn't appear online until after thearticle was published in the 2008 summer edition of the magazine2600. There is an associated YouTube video[8] showinghow to trick Skyhook's Location Service. The user searches Googlefor some other router's MAC address, sets his/her laptop tobroadcast that fake MAC address, and thereby fool their iPhone oriPod Touch's Location Services into thinking it's at the originalrouter's location.
The same exploit was published in April 2008 by a team led bySrdjan Capkun at the Department of Computer Science, ETH Zurich.[9]
A 2008 article published at wordpress exposes theunderlying protocol to query the Skyhook database for the physicallocation of any MAC address.[10]
